MEMBERSHIP - HOW TO JOIN
Welcome to First Presbyterian Class
These classes are held generally four times a year on Sunday mornings.
The All About First Presbyterian Classes
are taught by our pastors and are an opportunity
for visitors to learn more about the full
ministry and mission of our church and the
beliefs and structure of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.).
Contact us for dates
of future classes.
Methods for Joining the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
"The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus
Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of
membership. One becomes an active member of the church through faith in Jesus
Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all life. Baptism and a
public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance
into the active membership of the church" (PCUSA Book of Order,
G-5.0100a).
Individuals may become a member of First Presbyterian Church by one of the
following methods:
Profession of Faith
A person who has never been a member of any Christian church, or who has been
baptized but never officially "joined" a church, makes a profession
of faith in Jesus Christ.
Certificate of Transfer
A person who is a member of some other Christian Church and wishes to unite with
First Presbyterian may request that we write for her or his letter.
Reaffirmation of Faith
Some churches do not transfer members. A person who is a member of one of these
churches and wishes to join First Presbyterian will be asked to reaffirm his or
her faith in Jesus Christ. No "rebaptism" is required.
Affiliate Membership
A person who is a member of another Presbyterian church but who will only
temporarily be in the Burlington area may use this category. An affiliate
member is officially connected to First Presbyterian for a period of one year
while maintaining membership in her or his present church. The affiliate
relationship may be renewed.
Please contact one of our pastors, or speak with him
or her following a worship service, to talk about joining our growing church.
