Mission and Outreach

Mission and Outreach are vital parts of our church's ministry. We are encouraged in our faith journey to worship, study and be involved in helping others. Here are some valuable ways to get involved in both local and global mission.

Allied Churches of Alamance County

Allied Churches of Alamance County is a collective effort of about 200 churches that witnesses to the present reality of the kingdom of God in this community. It provides emergency services to all in need, while challenging and empowering those served to become self-sufficient. All are welcome to the ministries center on Fisher Street, especially the homeless, hungry, and those in need of resources and support.

We volunteer in programs like: preparing and serving meals to the night shelter guests twice a month, giving supplies that are needed on a monthly basis, and serving on the Board of Directors.

To volunteer by making phone calls, or volunteering your time, call 229-0881.

Furniture Ministry

There are times when individuals or families are in need of furniture; after a fire, when moving from homelessness to housing, and many other times. We know that there are times when a perfectly good piece of furniture is no longer needed in our households. So the match of the two is what our Furniture Ministry Program attempts to do.

We receive calls from someone wanting to give. We find those with trucks or trailers to pick-up the donation, store it, and wait for those in need to be referred to us by one of the local agencies. Sometimes volunteers are needed to clean up used furniture, or help set up someone's home. Please call 336-212-2937 or contact us if you are interested in helping. This form is available if you have items to donate.

Loaves and Fishes Food Ministry

Loaves and Fishes Food Ministry began in order to meet the growing need for this community's poor to have nutritious food they could fix for their families in their homes. Volunteers serve by packing grocery bags, sorting food, making sandwiches, or just donating food or money.

Our church names the second Sunday of each month as 'Hunger Awareness'. You are encouraged to bring cans of food and donate to the 'Pennies for Hunger' baskets at the end of each worship service.

October

Please remember to bring items to the Loaves and Fishes closet located in the right-hand closet in the Welcome Center. The designated items for October are canned vegetables.

GLOBAL OUTREACH

In the last few years we have built a relationship with several Presbyterian churches in and around Moyobamba, Peru. We send teams to construct buildings, do medical clinics, and support our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those who become involved find that our lives change in our awareness of our blessings, and in seeing a developing country first hand. Many support this ministry from right here in Burlington by donating items that are needed, praying for the ministry and supporting the program financially. First Presbyterian Church purchased land for a Christian university to be built over the next several years. It is exciting to see the need and look for God's guidance in helping to provide what is needed.

Boy Scout Troop 17

Troop 17 of the Boy Scouts of America was charted on January 4, 1935. Our own Dick Bell was one of the original charter members and became an Eagle Scout on August 2, 1938. Williard Earle was also a charter member. We have been in continuous operation since that time. Carl Garrison and Kelly Joyner awarded approximately 105 Eagle Scout awards in their time as Scoutmasters. The first Scoutmaster was W. A. Mebane, Jr. His Assistant Scoutmaster was Bob White.

John Roberts joined the following spring with the first class of Webelos Scouts from our own Pack 17. Together they have awarded 32 Eagle Scout ranks in the so called "new era".

This very active troop camps 10 months per year taking July and August off for Scoutmaster rejuvenation. We are a "High Adventure" oriented Troop, using canoeing and backpacking as our main methods of camping. We have been to New Mexico to the Philmont Scout Ranch as well as to the Northern Tier Canoe Base in Canada. We hike the Appalachian Trail, Uwharrie Trail and others. We have canoed the Dan River, Mayo River, New River, Haw River, Yadkin River, and several others.

If you are interested in joining Troop 17 or if you have any questions, contact us.

For more information visit the troop website.

Pennies for Hunger

The Pennies for Hunger offering is received during worship the second Sunday of each month.

The collection is sent to Salem Presbytery where it is then divided and returned to programs such as Loaves and Fishes and Meals on Wheels food ministries located here in Burlington.

Meals on Wheels

Each first Sunday of the month, loose offerings are contributed to Alamance County Meals on Wheels.

The Meals on Wheels office has been located here at First Presbyterian Church since the early 1970's. Each weekday volunteers deliver meals to seniors who are frail, homebound and live alone. Over 400 seniors receive meals through the program each day and over 120,000 meals are delivered a year. Meals on Wheels also offers a grocery assistance program which provides a personal grocery shopper for seniors who are unable to shop for themselves. The Groceries On Wheels program assists between 40 and 50 elderly individuals.

Volunteers and funds are always needed for these programs. For more information, please call 228-8815.

Praying for our Military

If you have a son or daughter or granddaughter or grandson who is serving in the military, please fill out this form. We would like to periodically list them in the newsletter, so that the congregation can pray for them.
