Music MinistriesCarol and Covenant Choirs

Music gives wings to words is a phrase credited to St. Augustine.

At First Presbyterian Church music supports the Word proclaimed through opportunities for service – opportunities for expanding these wings.  These include:

CHANCEL CHOIR (college age and adult):  The Chancel Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings 6:45-8:15pm.  NEW SINGERS are encouraged to take part.  In addition to leading in worship each Sunday, the Chancel Choir will sing a special service of music on November 7 in celebration of All Saints’ Day.  On December 19, the choir will be joined by our other choirs in the annual A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

COVENANT CHOIR (grades 3-5):  The Covenant Choir, led by Patrick Murphy, sings in worship about once a month.  In addition to singing, we explore making music in new and exciting ways.  Have you tried Boomwhackers? Come to Covenant Choir and you will! Covenant Choir rehearses on Sundays at 5:00-6:00pm in Room 220.

CAROL CHOIR (Kindergarten-grade 2): Led by Nan Wooten, fun activities and songs give these young singers an opportunity to explore their musical gifts.  Carol Choir sings in worship a few times during the year.  Rehearsals are Sundays 5:00-5:45pm in Room 224.

CARILLON CHOIR (handbells, high school to adult):  The Carillon Choir meets on Thursdays at 5:30-6:30pm in Room 228.  This handbell choir rings nearly 61 bells and 48 choir chimes!  If you have some music reading ability and/or previous handbell experience and are interested, please contact Patrick Murphy.

SUMMER CHOIR (high school to adult):  During the summer months (June-August), you are invited to join the Summer Choir as it leads worship through music.  Summer Choir meets each Sunday morning at 10:00 to learn the anthems for that day.  Our musical standard of excellence is maintained, but the music is easily learned in one rehearsal.  This is a wonderful way to lend your voice in worship, explore singing in the choir, and enjoying the fellowship of other musicians.  Contact Patrick Murphy to register or to ask questions.

Sanctuary Organ

Built in 1967 for our church by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio, the organ comprises 51 ranks of pipes (approximately 2400 pipes) and is an outstanding instrument which has been endorsed by many concert organists who have performed in organ recitals here. While it is essentially an instrument designed for worship services, it performs a majority of music from various countries and from different periods quite well. The acoustics of the sanctuary complement the sound of the organ as well as the sound of the spoken word. The sanctuary organ was a gift from Mrs. James Lee Love and was rebuilt and reinstalled with additions in the summer of 2007.

Williams Chapel Organ

The Williams chapel organ was installed in 1982. It was built by the Andover Organ Company of Methuen, Massachusetts. It has fifteen stops and 984 pipes. It is one of the outstanding tracker organs in this part of the country. The chapel organ was a gift from Elizabeth F. and Frank S. Holt, Sr.
